MARITIME SECURITY OPERATIVE
We are an award-winning company, protecting more ships than any other maritime security company, ensuring that our clients don’t have to lose out on global trading opportunities; we keep ships, crew, and their cargo safe in some of the most dangerous maritime environments in the world.
1000+ guards currently work for Ambrey, trained in-house to an international standard and employed from all major ports around the Indian Ocean.
Our guards are deployed in teams that are blended to meet the requirements of the task and the needs of our client.
We meet client requirements for any team-size or qualifications, subject to a risk assessment of your voyage. Our size and experience means we are well aware of the specific demands of individual flag states and major charterers. The large number of guards we have deployed on any given day, combined with our deployed coverage, also allows us to respond quickly to requests at short notice. Our fastest time from request to embarkation of a team is just under three hours – an industry benchmark.
In addition to the extensive military experience required of our guards, they each undergo specialised maritime security and emergency response training.
The teams are always re-tested on their weapons safety handling and Rules for the Use of Force at the beginning of every transit and, as we own all of our own firearms and equipment, each of our transfer vessels has a resident armourer to conduct routine maintenance and to check that the firearms are in peak condition when our guards are deployed. To keep advice up to date, we give our guards access to our in-house intelligence team who provides advice and incident notices to assist them in their advice to Masters.
We have high standards and clear minimum requirements when it comes to the experience, skills and conduct of the Maritime Security Operatives (MSOs) we recruit, so that Ambrey guards maintain their reputation as the best in the business. All our guards must meet a set of minimum criteria:

Working as a Maritime Security Operative for Ambrey offers you the chance to use your military experience and skills to protect the vessels and crew as they transit through high risk areas affected by piracy and maritime crime.
With the expansion of Ambrey’s fleet – including Vessel Based Armouries (VBA’s), we provide more accommodation and opportunity to operate offshore than many other competitors.
I wake up 0600 and rendezvous with the agent at the Galle Villa at 0700, for transfer to the Sri Lankan naval base.
Our team arrives at the naval base and we check over all our equipment and weapons, including counting every round of ammunition.
We go through immigration and customs and embark the 20-30 minute launch to the client vessel.
On embarking the client vessel all our weapons and equipment are safely stored.
The Team Leader briefs the Master, then the crew are briefed all together and a security assessment is conducted.
The Team Leader takes us through a brief refresher on SOPs, Rules for the Use of Force and weapons handling tests.
We get to try a wide variety of food depending on the nationality of the crews onboard, which means we always look forward to mealtimes!
We do a 3-4 hour watch on rotation, with handovers between the team taking 10-15 minutes.
We also participate in vessel drills such as man overboard, abandon ship and fire drills. It’s important as every ship is different.
Our watches tend to coincide with the crew watches, so you really get to know members of the crew.
In your down time there are opportunities for reading, personal development or exercising.
Sleeping arrangements are normally either shared or single cabins.
