WHAT DO YOU DO DAY-TO-DAY?

As the Group Managing Director I am focused on ensuring we are delivering on our core business aims and objectives whilst ensuring our medium to long term strategy is well aligned to where the market is going. At Ambrey we have always prided ourselves on reading the market direction well and ensuring we are pioneers and drivers of change, so I spend a lot of time questioning and challenging our senior management team to ensure we are always innovating.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST?

The best aspect of my job is getting on the road and seeing our clients, staff and suppliers in person. Security and the shipping industry are a people business so you get to meet an amazingly-diverse set of people from a huge variety of backgrounds. At the same time you get to travel all over the globe and experience different cultures and cuisines, which is a real bonus.

WHAT MAKES YOU GOOD AT IT?

I have always found it easy to get along with people, so forging new relationships and building trust and understanding comes very naturally to me. My military and commercial risk management background and education give me the strategic geo-political understanding and instincts to deal with anything the business or our clients ask of me.

WHAT’S THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE?

I’m an open and honest person, so while I try and make sure we give our clients what they want I always include my own recommendations. So it can be hard sometimes if those experience-led opinions or pieces of advice get ignored because of commercial necessity. That can be very frustrating especially when it so frequently ultimately harms their people, assets or reputation in ways I know could have been avoided.
